Filing closed on Friday for the Seattle mayoral race, which is an open seat after incumbent Jenny Durkan’s surprising retirement after just one term. Fifteen different candidates are seeking the Emerald City’s highest office despite the job’s long track record of being a destroyer of dreams: No Seattle mayor has managed to get reelected since Greg Nickels in 2005, and before that, Norm Rice in 1993.
It took two tries, but we finally saw something out of Congress that would have been unthinkable just over a week ago: Republican House members actually voted “yes” on impeaching Donald Trump—not a lot of them, but enough to squeak into the double digits.
It’s very unusual to see a non-November election that is for all the marbles, but that’s what’s on tap on Tuesday in the two Senate runoff elections in Georgia. If Democratic candidates Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock both manage to defeat their Republican opponents, the Democratic Party will have a Senate majority (thanks to Kamala Harris’ tiebreaking vote), and along with Joe Biden and a Democratic-controlled House, a governing trifecta.
Suburbia has repeatedly cropped up in the headlines this election season, ever since a more-bizarre-than-usual Donald Trump tweet-pitched to the “Suburban Housewives of America,” pledging to protect them from invasion by evildoers.
Like most things he believes, of course, Trump’s views are divorced from current reality about the suburbs.
